Never thought about a tax refund?

We’re looking at making the tax refunds process automatic. Here’s an example of how that could work for Maura.

What's proposed

Maura has worked full-time in a pet store for several years as she loves working with animals. She has decided to take this further by going back to school to become a vet nurse. While she studies, she will continue to work part-time at the pet store.

Maura doesn’t have to do anything but instead of missing out on her refund she will automatically get any refund she’s due paid directly into her account, as long as Inland Revenue has the right details for her. Maura keeps her contact details and bank account information up-to-date with Inland Revenue through myIR.

What happens now

Maura has worked full-time in a pet store for several years as she loves working with animals. She has decided to take this further by going back to school to become a vet nurse. While she studies, she will continue to work part-time at the pet store.

As Maura has reduced the number of hours she will be working, she is likely to be eligible for a tax refund. Maura hears about tax refunds but doesn’t get around to contacting Inland Revenue to complete the refund process so misses out on any refund due.
